Faith and Religion: Program looks at holiday traditions

The program "Holiday Traditions from Around the World" will be presented at the next luncheon for the LIFT (Ladies In Fellowship Together) group at the First Congregational Church, 47 Aurora St. in Hudson, Nov. 8. Lunch will be served by the church staff at noon, followed by the program. Highlights of the program include history, customs, music and decorations of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza and New Year. Free family movie night offered Nov. 17 Western Reserve Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) hosts a free movie night on the third Saturday of every month. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. with the movies beginning promptly at 7. These family-friendly movies are open to the public. Movie dates include: Nov. 17, "A Family Thanksgiving" (not rated), and Dec. 22, "The Family Holiday" (not rated). For more information, call 330-650-1242. Rejoice hosts babysitting night Dec. 8 Rejoice Lutheran Church, 7855 Stow Road in Hudson, will host Parents' Night Out Babysitting Dec. 8 from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Parents can see a movie, start holiday shopping, share a dinner out or just enjoy some uninterrupted quiet time. Children ages 3-12 (must be potty-trained) are welcome to an evening of games, movies, pizza, crafts, snacks and fun. Drop off children no earlier than 5:30 p.m. and pick them up no later than 10:30 p.m. Parents must sign their children in and out, and provide cell phone and emergency contact information. Adults and teens will be on site to provide and supervise activities. United Methodist hosts 'Search for Christ Child' The Hudson United Methodist Church, 2600 Hudson-Aurora Road, will host a "Search for the Christ Child" Dec. 2 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The Search for the Christ Child begins in the inn where a census is taken. After light refreshments, a shepherd guide will accompany groups of travelers on an interactive pilgrimage in search of the Christ Child. Visitors are encouraged to dialogue along the way as they meet shepherds, angels, wise men and innkeepers. This 30-minute journey is free and for all ages. Cornerstone plans Live Nativity Cornerstone Family Church, 1460 Hines Hill Road in Boston Township, will host its sixth annual Live Nativity Dec. 15 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Guests will walk to the manger as they interact with the Magi, Roman guards, shepherds, live animals and more. UUWA presents It Only Hurts When I Laugh! The Unitarian Universalist Women's Association will host Bill Brauning's "It Only Hurts When I Laugh!" Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Akron, 3300 Morewood Drive in Fairlawn. Brauning serves as an adjunct professor teaching Pop Culture with Cleveland Community College. There is a $5 suggested donation at the door. Childcare available. Church plans laser tag, Bach concert First United Methodist Church in Cuyahoga Falls, 245 Portage Trail, invites fourth- through sixth-graders to an afternoon of laser tag at Fun-n-Stuff Nov. 11. Children should bring a sack lunch to be eaten at church at noon. They then will travel by church bus, returning at 4 p.m. The cost of the afternoon is $9 and permission slips are available in the church office and online at www.firstchurchcf.com. On Nov. 16 at 7 p.m., Dean Wagner, organist and music director at First Church, will complete his recital series of the Complete Organ Works of Bach. This final concert will include the Prelude and Fugue in b minor, 4 Leipzig chorales: Come Holy Ghost, Lord God (2 settings), Lord Jesus Christ Turn to Us; Come God, Creator, Holy Spirit, the Chorale partita on Hail Merciful Jesus; Trio sonata 5, and Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor. A reception will follow. Child care is provided.
