Mitchell leads, Kurtz in contention after day one at Hudson Junior

In the first round of the Hudson Junior Invitational, five boys golfers came in under par. That group includes the defending tournament champion and runner-up.

Kyle Mitchell of Powell had an excellent first day at The Country Club of Hudson, shooting a round of 66 (six under par) to take a three-stroke lead heading into the second round.

Hudson native Will Kurtz — the defending tournament runner-up — also had a good first day. Kurtz shot a round of 69 (three under par) and sits in second place.

Defending tournament champion Jack Herceg of Dublin also is in contention. Herceg is one of three boys golfers to shoot a round of 71 (one under par). He is joined by Charlie Toman of Chardon and Matthew Puligini of Middletown, Del. at one under par.

Round fwo of the Hudson Junior will begin tomorrow at 6:20 a.m. at The County Club of Hudson.
