Powers named OHSAA president

Aurora High athletic administrator Paul Powers has been selected as the 2017-18 Ohio High School Athletic Association board of directors president. He will assume his one-year role at the Aug. 10 board of directors meeting.

Powers is in his ninth year as athletic administrator at Aurora. Prior to that, he was athletic director at Bedford High for 10 years and served in the same capacity at West Geauga from 1993-98.

"I am honored to represent Aurora schools in my new role. I look forward to positively impacting interscholastic athletics as I work with other athletic sdministrators and school officials from across Ohio. Through these collaborative efforts, I hope to support our student athletes and to continue to assist them in building the important life characteristics of sportsmanship, teamwork, respect and responsibility."

He is a 1986 graduate of West Geauga and received his bachelor's degree in sports management from Ohio Northern in 1991. He received his CAA certification from the NIAAA in 1996 and has completed 34 of the 40 leadership training courses.

During his 24-year career, Powers has twice received the OIAAA's distinguished service award, was selected as the 2009 Northeast Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association AD of the year, received the OIAAA Citation Award"in 2012 and was given the State Award of Merit last year.

Powers is in his second year as president of the OIAAA, having served as president of the NEOIAAA from 2009-11. He has served on the NEOIAAA executive board for the past 20 years and has been a member of the OHSAA Northeast District Athletic Board since 2012.
