The Hudson Rugby Club age 16-and-younger boys team advanced to the state semifinals with a 26-20 victory over Medina May 19 at Dante Lavelli Stadium.
With the win, Hudson (3-3) is scheduled to play the Lakewood St. Edward-Granger Township Highland winner in the state semifinals May 27 at Notre Dame College in South Euclid. Play is set to begin at 10 a.m.
St. Edward was scheduled to play Highland May 23. Results were not available at press time.
Hudson got on the board in the third minute of the match when David Eubank scored a try. Nate Hensel had the assist.
Four minutes later, Chris Doyle had a try and Hensel had another conversion to make it 14-0.
Medina capitalized on a Hudson off-side penalty with a penalty kick to make it 14-3 in the 11th minute.
Taking advantage of a bad ball in a line-out, Garret O'Connell intercepted the throw and took it in for a try from five meters out. The conversion was no good as Hudson had a 19-8 lead at halftime.
Medina capitalized on a Hudson error to take a 20-19 lead 10 minutes into the second half.
But Doyle broke free at the 24th minute for a 39-meter run and try in the corner. Hensel converted on a very wide kick to put Hudson up 26-20.
The defense did its part the rest of the way to ice the win.
