HUDSON -- They are fully aware that the road will get much tougher the rest of the way.
Nonetheless, the Lady Explorers are flying high right now.
The second-seeded Hudson girls lacrosse team made a stellar 2017 postseason debut after posting a lopsided 21-1 victory over 14th-seeded Solon in the opening round of the Division I, Region 2 tournament.
The contest took place May 16 at Hudson Memorial Stadium.
With the win, the Lady Explorers were scheduled to host ninth-seeded North Canton Hoover, a 10-9 winner against seventh-seeded Brecksville-Broadview Heights, May 16, in the Region 2 quarterfinals May 19. Results were not available at press time.
Hudson, which had won 13 in a row as of press time, scored five goals in the first four-plus minutes and simply had too much speed, too much skill and too many weapons for the Lady Comets, who finished 2-14 on the season.
Lady Explorers head coach Persy Sample admitted that it was to gauge her team's performance in a contest as one-sided as the one that took place May 16.
"It was a tough one," she said. "We got a lot of younger players' time and some experience. That's all you can ask for in a game like this."
A little more than 16 minutes into the game, the running-clock rule was in effect since Hudson (14-2) had an 11-1 lead.
By then, just about everyone got on the field for the Lady Explorers.
"It's important [to have depth] because it's six games if you want to get to the state final," Sample said. "That's almost half a season."
Hudson eased up considerably after the first 10 minutes, but Solon had trouble getting the ball since the Lady Explorers passed the ball effectively from side to side.
Piper Trattner led Hudson with four goals and Kendall Paltani, Maddie Valko and Sarah Hinkle each had three goals. Sarah Hinkle also had an assist.
Elizabeth Hinkle added two goals and one assist and Sarah Keller had one goal and three assists.
Corinne Hunt contributed one goal and three assists and Elle Marquez had one goal and one assist.
Shelby Johnson scored her first goal of the season and Mia Becker contributed her second goal in 2017. Ari Bankovich scored the first goal for the Lady Explorers.
"Shelby always wants to play offense," Sample said. "I hope we don't need her to play offense against different teams, but it's nice to see her get one."
Julia Stiles finished with three assists and Tyler Vidmar had two assists.
Elizabeth Hinkle won 7 of 8 draws and Marquez won 6 of 8 draws for Hudson.
Cate Mandry scored the lone goal for Solon.
The Lady Explorers had some turnovers and they had some lapses in concentration.
Of course, in a match as lopsided as this one, Sample knew such things were inevitable.
"The intensity wasn't what I liked, but in a game like this, it's hard to have that kind of intensity," Sample said. "We got to run a lot of our offense, which was good."
