It got a little scary, but the Hudson boys lacrosse team pulled it off.

The host Explorers improved to 11-5 on the season after posting a tense 8-7 victory over Hunting Valley University in overtime May 9 at Hudson Memorial Stadium.

Cole Miller scored the winning goal with 25.2 seconds left. Merrick Widdoes had the assist. Miller scored twice and had an assist for Hudson.

"We needed a big rebound after the loss to Hoover [12-11 May 5], Explorers head coach David Blue said. "The Preppers were bound and determined not to let that happen."

Anthony Rightnour led Hudson's offense with four goals and Widdoes and Brady Ludewig also scored for the Explorers.

Max Cole had two assists and Jack Burdett and Angelo Donatelli each had one assist for Hudson.

Explorers' goalies Stroud Corr and Matt Withem each made six saves in the cage. Miller and Withem received the game ball for their efforts.

Enrique Rodriguez scooped up five ground balls and Nathan Slater and Max Kleiman picked up two ground balls apiece.

"Matt had two big saves in the fourth quarter," Blue said. "Our defense played a much better game."

Hudson outshot University 31-30 and had a 36-22 advantage in ground balls. The Explorers, who had 16 turnovers compared to 10 giveaways for the Preppers (10-4), won just 6 of 19 face-offs.

The Explorers received the No. 2 seed in the Division I, Region 2 bracket.

North Canton Hoover earned the top seed and Cleveland St. Ignatius and Lakewood St. Edward got the third and fourth seeds, respectively.

Hudson earned an opening-round bye and is scheduled to host the Brecksville-Broadview Heights/Uniontown Green winner May 18 at Hudson Memorial Stadium. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
