It was a tale of two matches for the Hudson boys volleyball team.
The Explorers earned a convincing 25-10, 25-10, 25-14 victory over Perry April 26 at Ray "Buck" Hyser Gymnasium.
The win came after host Hudson suffered a 26-24, 25-9, 25-14 loss to Akron Archbishop Hoban April 25.
"Perry is a second-year squad," Explorers head coach Larry Meehan said. "They worked hard, but they struggle to compete.
"We played reasonably well in the first set and had the opportunity to mix in some of our reserve players through the last two sets."
Kolby Miller led Hudson with six kills and three aces and Larry Meehan, the coach's son, had five kills and four aces.
Also contributing for the Explorers were Luke Zelich (three kills and two blocks) and Kyle Michl (eight assists).
Against Hoban, Hudson (4-8) had a 23-22 lead in the first set.
"We blocked well, scrambled on defense and we mixed in a few impressive kills. We played with great heart.
"I was very pleased with our competitiveness against a far more experienced and skilled team."
Mitch Gray and Shane Chilcott each had five kills and three blocks and Meehan had eight assists, three kills and three digs.
Aidan L'Hommedieu added eight assists and Thomas Morgan had four digs. Also contributing for the Explorers was Kellen McCabe (two aces and two digs).
"Thomas Morgan was instrumental in dealing with tough serves and keeping the ball alive against Hoban's strong attack," coach Meehan said. "In a gutty performance, middle blockers Mitch Gray and Shane Chilcott really worked hard to give our back row a fighting chance."
The Explorers were scheduled to visit Brecksville-Broadview Heights April 27. Results were not available at press time.
Hudson is set to visit Kent Roosevelt May 2 at 5:30 p.m.
