The Hudson boys track and field team bounced back from its season-opening loss to Nordonia in a big way April 4. The Explorers evened their 2017 record by downing Suburban League National Conference rival North Royalton by the score of 80-57 at Hudson Memorial Stadium.
With the victory, Hudson improved its overall record on the season to 1-1. The Explorers also are 1-1 in the conference.
Junior Dawson Wervey was a double winner in individual events for the Explorers. Wervey finished first in the 400-meter race with a time of 52.3 seconds. He also placed first in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 10 inches.
Hudson accounted for five more first-place finishes in individual track events. Junior Greg Mailey claimed the 100 with a time of 11.8, while sophomore Hunter Norman captured the 300 hurdles with an effort of 45.8.
Other Explorers notching first-place finishes in individual events were senior Connor Sinko in the 800 (2:10.2), senior Blake Roberts in the 1,600 (4:43) and sophomore Jacob Russo in the 3200 (10:09).
Hudson also finished first in three of the four relay races. They won the 800 relay with a time of 1:40.9. The members of that unit were junior Max Doyle, senior Sam Durkin, junior Zack Rickey and sophomore Nivash Jayaram.
The Explorers also claimed first place in the 1,600 relay with an effort of 3:43.1. That contingent consisted of Jayaram, senior Nick Zehnal, freshman Luke Good and Wervey.
In addition, Hudson crossed the finish line first in the 3,200 relay (8:31.1). That squad contained Sinko, sophomore Kenny McCaughey, junior Eric Halford and Roberts.
Junior Jack Good finished second in a pair of individual events, the 800 (2:14) and the 1,600 (4:44.5).
Also finishing second in individual track events were Doyle in the 100 (11.8), Rickey in the 200 (25.1), senior Jack Sarkisian in the 400 (54.9), junior Dominic Weaver in the 110 hurdles (17.1), sophomore Adam Beucler in the 1,600 (4:44.4) and Halford in the 3200 (10:27).
Weaver took third in the 300 hurdles (47.1), while Jayaram was third in the 100 with a time of 11.9. Luke Good placed third in the 400 with an effort of 55.2 and McCaughey finished third in the 3,200 (10:31).
Four Explorers finished third in individual field events. Among them were senior John Marcinkiewicz in the shot put (43-1), senior Drew Heller in the discus (120-5), Mailey in the long jump (19-2) and sophomore Noah Beseda in the pole vault (10 feet).
