Janset Aykanat, 9-year-old fourth-grade student from East Woods Elementary School, won two championships at the Newgy Ohio Open Table Tennis Tournament, which concluded Feb. 18 at the Shaw JCC of Akron.
More than 100 USA Table Tennis-rated players competed in 15 different giant round-robin events during the two-day tournament.
The youngest player in the tournament, Hudson resident Janset Aykanat competed in four different events, including two giant round-robin rating events (U1000 and U1200), open doubles and 41-point handicapped event.
At the U1000 giant round-robin event, among 14 players, Janset won the championship trophy by beating Chris Jordan from Akron in the finals.
With her strong tomahawk serves and controlled forehand loop attach, she came back from two games down, winning 3-2 in the final. Janset finished the U1000 event with a 9-0 record.
Janset won her second championship trophy in the U1200 giant round-robin event. Among 17 players, Janset, who lost couple of close matches during the group stage, advanced into the elimination round.
In the semifinals, Janset rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Strongsville resident Shyam Polaconda 3-2. Polaconda defeated Janset during the group stage.
The U1200 finals event showcased one of the most thrilling matches of the tournament. By mixing up her strategic offensive and defensive game with strong top and back spin serves, Janset defeated Matthew Joonsung Oh from Columbus 3-2 in the fifth game at deuce.
Along with her two championships in U1000 and U1200 giant round-robin events, Janset joined her coach, Samson Dubina, and managed to reach the finals of the open doubles event among eight teams.
Her team lost the finals match 3-2 against Roger Liu and Jason Zhang.
Janset successfully represented her affiliated clubs, Samson Dubina Table Tennis Academy, Twinsburg Table Tennis Club and the City of Hudson, at the Ohio Open Tournament.
