The Hudson boys basketball team had a chance to help its rival to the south.
Unfortunately for the Explorers and for that matter, the Stow-Munroe Falls boys basketball team, it was not to be.
Despite leading most of the way, Hudson fell to 8-12 overall and 3-9 in the Suburban League National Conference after losing to Wadsworth 57-48 Feb. 17 at Ray "Buck" Hyser Gymnasium.
The Explorers led 11-2 after one quarter and 19-14 at halftime. The Grizzlies (11-2 in the conference), who need to defeat Nordonia in their conference finale and hope North Royalton upsets Stow-Munroe Falls Feb. 24 to get a piece of the National Conference title, took their first lead with 4 minutes, 52 seconds remaining in the game.
The Grizzlies closed the deal by making 12-of-13 shots from the foul line.
Point guard Christian Szalay led Wadsworth with a game-high 22 points. Tony Hewitt added 21 points for the Grizzlies.
Alex Beck led Hudson with 10 points.
The Explorers earned a 51-41 victory in the junior varsity contest. Anthony Chokenea led Hudson with 10 points.
The Explorers lost 45-35 in the freshman game.
