AURORA -- Heading into the Suburban League Tournament Feb. 4 at Aurora High School, Hudson head wrestling coach Joe Caniglia had as close to a full lineup as he has had in weeks.

Caniglia knew that probably wouldn't be enough for the Explorers to compete with the top teams in the National Conference.

"In this conference, you've got some great teams," he said. "Even when you don't run into great teams, you've got teams have have two or three really good guys. We fall into that group. Those guys are competing the way we want them to."

In the end, Hudson finished eighth overall in the Suburban League Tournament with 76 points. This year, all 15 league teams competed in one bracket.

Wadsworth won the team title with 284 points to claim the overall title in the National Conference. Brecksville-Broadview Heights took second with 228 points.

The Explorers ended up edging Twinsburg (73.5 points) for third place among National Conference. That meant Hudson finished fourth overall in the National Conference this season. Brecksville and Twinsburg placed second and third, respectively, in the overall standings.

While Hudson did not have any wrestlers reach the title match at the tournament, three Explorers were able to bring home third-place finishes.

At 126 pounds, junior Dietrich Boysel had one of his best performances of the season.

After a bye, Boysel opened by pinning Copley's Adam Nedolast in 49 seconds.

In the semifinal, Boysel went right a Brecksville's Nolan Wochna, but lost a 5-2 decision.

"I think D wrestled a good match," Caniglia said. "He just needs to fine-tune some things going forward."

Boysel took third place by dominating Revere's Nate Ferrar 10-0 in the consolation final.

At 160 pounds, senior Austin Mullen started well, pinning Nordonia's Justin Olszko in 1:01 and beating Twinsbug's Austin Cefaratti 5-1 to reach the semifinal.

In the semifinal, however, Mullen ran into Stow All-Ohioan Joe Andrassy, who was making his return from a foot injury. Mullen wasn't intimidated, but lost a 9-3 decision.

"Mullen wrestled six minutes with a very good kid," Caniglia said. "When you look at Joe, it's his first week back, so you have go at him."

Senior 182-pounder Kyle Minor also took third place.

After a bye, Minor opened with a 7-0 win over Barberton's Paul Zentiska, but lost a very tight 3-2 decision to Copley's Conor Knabe.

Minor shut down Brecksville's Nick Franks in the third-place match, as he scored a 5-0 decision.

Hudson also scored a sixth-place finish from sophomore 145-pounder John Sweet. Sweet lost 6-2 to Aurora's Dom Suber.

The Explorers are scheduled to visit Crestwood Feb. 9 in Mantua at 7 p.m. and Revere in Feb. 10 in Bath Township at 6 p.m.
