On multiple occasions, the Hudson wrestling team has made it a habit to grab victory when defeat was a likely possibility.
Unfortunately for the Explorers, they got the tables turned on them in North Royalton.
Hudson fell to 8-5 overall and 3-4 in the Suburban League National Conference after losing to the host Bears (38-36) and Twinsburg (36-33) Jan. 19.
"Both were close matches that came down to the final match to decide the team score," Hudson head coach Joe Caniglia said. "Unfortunately, we gave up bonus points in a couple of matches and it cost us. These were the third and fourth matches out of seven league duals that came down to the last match to decide the team score."
Hudson won the final matches of the night to edge both Stow-Munroe Falls and Cuyahoga Falls earlier in the season.
The following Explorers won their matches against North Royalton:
113 pounds: Nicci Polifrone, pin, 4 minutes, 45 seconds
126: Joe Graf, pin, 3:30
132: Dietrich Boysel, pin, 1:32
160: Austin Mullen, pin, 47 seconds
170: Michael Caniglia, 3-1
182: Kyle Minor, pin, 1:20
195: Chase Gasser, 1-0
The following Hudson wrestlers won against Twinsburg:
113: Polifrone, 4-2
126: Graf, pin, 3:31
160: Mullen, 9-5
170: Michael Caniglia, pin, 5:02
182: Minor, pin, 1:01
195: Gasser, 5-2
285: Jack Nord, pin, 3:06
"We always say good things happen when you are aggressive and Joe Graf was pretty solid in scoring points," Joe Caniglia said. "Michael (Caniglia) was down 5-2 going into the third period against Twinsburg. It was good to see him battle back to tie it up and score a pin late in the match.
"Kyle Minor scored two first-period pins in dominant fashion. Chase Gasser is starting to put some things together and figure out how he can best manage a match for himself. That was good to see."
Hudson is scheduled to compete at the Division I state duals Jan. 25 at Maple Heights. The third-seeded Explorers are scheduled to wrestle against sixth-seeded Bedford. Wrestling is set to begin at 5 p.m.
Hudson is set to host Mayfield Jan. 26 at Ray "Buck" Hyser Gymnasium. The competition is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
