Reserve girls defeat

Laurel on the road

The Western Reserve Academy girls cross country team earned a 27-31 victory over Laurel (Shaker Heights) Oct. 4 at the Laurel School Butler Campus in Russell.

Hudson resident Olivia Robinson, a freshman, led the Pioneers with a third-place time of 23 minutes, 33 seconds.

Freshman Joey Houska was next for Reserve with a fourth-place clocking of 23:39 and teammate Clara Fu, a freshman, finished fifth (23:40).

Rounding out the top five for WRA were senior captain Elizabeth Downing (sixth, 24:11) and Hudson resident Libby Russ (seventh, 24:23), a junior.

"It has been nearly 20 years since we've had as many freshmen make such an impact on our varsity," Pioneers head coach Jeff Warner said. "All three freshmen have run times under 23 minutes all season.

"The fastest of the group has been Joey, who is the only one to have run cross country before this year. Joey has been wrestling with knee tendonitis and she lost her shoe in an early mud puddle, so she was a bit slower than normal.

"Olivia and Clara have been wonderful surprises for us and are still improving. Libby started off the season slowly because of leg injuries from track, but she's starting to come back around.

"Elizabeth is having the best year she has had since her freshman year. She also has provided exactly the kind of leadership and support that this young team has needed."

Reserve was scheduled to conclude its season at the Andrews Osborne Invitational Oct. 8 in Willoughby. Results were not available at press time.

Explorers keep playoff hopes alive

The Hudson football team was ranked eighth in the Division II, Region 5 computer ratings with 10.0833 points as of press time. The top eight teams in each region qualify for the Division II playoffs.
