Pioneers run at Sandy Valley
The Western Reserve Academy cross country teams competed at the Sandy Valley Classic Invitational Sept. 24 in Sandy Township.
The Pioneer boys finished second out of eight teams with 69 points. East Canton won the small-school competition with 63 points and Newcomerstown took third with 87 points.
East Canton's Demetrius Snellenberger easily placed first out of 63 runners with a time of 16 minutes, 7.07 seconds.
Reserve's Danny Mylott captured second with a clocking of 16:48.93. Sammy Bluso was next for WRA in ninth (18:04.55).
Rounding out the top five for the Pioneers were Ian Israelson (17th, 18:56.57), Zach Bloom (22nd, 19:20.51) and Sasha Davis (23rd, 19:21.79).
Reserve's girls finished fourth with 108 points.
Navarre Fairless blew away the competition with 19 points and Dalton (50) and Sandy Valley (64) placed second and third, respectively.
Fairless captured four of the first five places and five of the first seven places.
Sophie Wentling of Fairless finished first out of 59 runners with a time of 20:36.25.
Olivia Robinson led the Pioneers with an 18th-place clocking of 22:53.3.
Rounding out the top five for Reserve were Clara Fu (21st, 23:16.65), Elizabeth Downing (23rd, 23:25.92), Libby Russ (26th, 23:55.24) and Audrey Hu (34th, 25:05.28).
The WRA boys are scheduled to compete at the Woodridge Cuyahoga Valley National Park Invitational Oct. 1 in Peninsula. Racing is set to begin at 1 p.m. The Pioneer girls are scheduled to compete at the Gilmour Academy Invitational Sept. 30 in Gates Mills. Racing is set to begin at 5 p.m.
WRA football team
improves to 5-0
The season is halfway over.
And the Western Reserve Academy football team still hasn't lost yet.
The host Pioneers improved to 5-0 after posting a convincing 34-0 victory over Reigning Sports Academy Sept. 24.
The Thunder came into the game averaging 35 points per contest. Reserve's defense has not allowed a touchdown in the last 10 quarters.
WRA was up 20-0 at halftime. Owen Levine ran for three touchdowns and passed for two others. Trent Clarke had a 30-yard TD reception and Michael Malen had a 35-yard score. Evan Bongers had an interception for Reserve. WRA is scheduled to entertain the Columbus Crusaders Oct. 2 at 2 p.m.
two tennis matches
Hudson graduate Dominic Polifrone, a sophomore on the Baldwin Wallace (Berea) University men's tennis team, recently won two matches at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Championships at Kalamazoo (Mich.) College.
Polifrone earned 6-1, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-4 wins.
