Asian Sun Martial Arts student brought home eight medals from the USA Taekwondo National Championships in San Jose, Calif.
The six-day tournament took place over July 4 weekend. More than 3,000 martial artists from all over the country competed in the country's largest Taekwondo event.
Asian Sun Competition Team medalists were Hudson resident Miranda Coe, 16, gold; Ryan Bell, 39, gold; Ryan Heerema, 13, gold; Hannah Hover, 12, silver; Rob Weinert, 32, silver; Katie Harper, 10 bronze; Jeff Heerema, 42, bronze; and Michael Schmitt, 12, bronze.
All team members competed in Olympic-style sparring. In this style, opponents score by kicking to the head or landing kicks and punches to the torso.
To qualify for Nationals, athletes had to attend state championships earlier in the year in Columbus.
Asian Sun Competition Team members also included Hudson residents Vincent Ripepi, Alexia Andrachik and Nadia Andrachik and Tiger Du, Isabelle Collyer and Derrick Adkins.
