Brownlee's Baseball Academy in Tallmadge is adding a girls softball program called the Lady Lookouts.
The program's head will be Alanna Barker, who is a former Ohio University (Athens) and Akron Springfield High School pitcher.
"We've had a men's program since 1992," Brownlee's Baseball Academy founder and president Paul Brownlee said.
"We have been trying to have girls for years. I met with a friend of mine, Kevin Pratt. He told me Alanna would be the perfect fit."
Barker, a 1995 Springfield graduate, helped lead the Lady Spartans to four state titles.
She finished 93-3 during her career and was a three-time All-Ohio selection.
Barker also is a member of the Summit County Hall of Fame.
"Her passion for softball is off the charts," Brownlee said. "She has great people skills and a great personality. She's really intense.
Barker has been doing private hitting, fielding and pitching lessons for the last six years.
"I'm pumped," she said. "I'm excited to get the news out there."
Barker, who has spent time as the pitching coach for the Muskingum University (New Concord) softball team, will work year-round with the program, which has a handful of teams thus far.
"We have 10 through 14 and under and possibly a 16-and-under team," she said. "Right now, my plan is to look for coaches. Tryouts are in August."
Barker has previously worked with former Akron Racers' player Michaela Minner and Darcy Thompson.
