The Hudson Rugby Club girls team is heading to the state championship match.
Hudson rallied to earn an 18-17 victory over Lakewood in a state semifinal contest May 24 at Lavelli Field.
With the win, Hudson (4-4) earned a date with defending state champion Cleveland St. Joseph Academy May 31 at Lavelli Field. Game time is set for 5:45 p.m.
Hudson and Lakewood split their matches during the regular season. In the two teams' latest matchup, Hudson rallied from a two-point deficit.
Trailing 17-15, senior Sarah Tomasulo converted a penalty kick as time ran out.
"The back line of Katie Klemencic, Sarah Tomasulo, Caitlin Weigel, Erica DeRoche, Lizzie Rich, Alexis McIntosh and Maritza Gallardo along with subs Diana Ranieri, MacKenzie Hillebrecht, Brittany Harter and Meagan Walters played outstanding rugby, keeping Lakewood off balance with their passing, running and tackling," Hudson head coach Scott Koebley said.
Weigel posted two tries with long runs, while sophomore Madi Edge powered for the other try in the second half.
"The forwards, led by Dom Oates Madi Edge, Hannah Trommer, Vanessa Kreiss, Alex Richey, Alex Biazzo, Renee Agnor, Chris Kinsey, Natalie Bacon and Amy O'Connor played hard all match," Koebley said. "They won possessions with their scrumming, rucking and tackling."
Prior to 2014, Hudson had finished third in the state the last three years.
