It wasn't a postseason game, but if the Hudson softball team has another performance like this, the Lady Explorers could make things very interesting in tournament play.
Hudson improved to 8-12 on the season after posting a 13-12 victory over Aurora May 10 on the road.
The Lady Explorers scored seven runs in the third inning to take a 10-3 lead. The Lady Greenmen scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Hudson prevailed.
Both teams had 12 hits. The Lady Explorers had one error, while Aurora finished with six errors.
Right-hander Shayna Smith got the start in the circle.
Left-hander Lexi Dorr relieved Smith in the sixth, but Smith returned to the game in the seventh to get the win.
Smith struck out the Lady Greenmen's No. 7 batter and then got the next batter to hit a sharp ground out that was handled by shortstop Erika Howard.
Smith walked the next batter and then Aurora, which is the top seed in the Solon Division I East sectional-district tournament, got a single and a two-run double to cut Hudson's lead to 13-12.
Fortunately, Smith got out of the game when the Lady Greenmen's No. 3 batter hit a sharp grounder to Smith, who knocked it down and threw to first base to get the final out. Smith threw 109 pitches in the win.
Sara Gedeon finished with four hits, including a double and a triple, and Sydney Coleman added three doubles for Hudson. Eden Janesch also had a three-run homer for the Lady Explorers.
"It was an exciting matchup against a very aggressive hitting team," Hudson head coach Don Sewell said. "Although it got too close at the end, it was good to see the girls finish the game and slip out of Aurora with the win."
The Lady Explorers struck out just four times in 47 trips to the plate.
"We saw 158 pitches," Sewell said. "We put the ball in play and forced Aurora to make plays."
Hudson was scheduled to visit Stow-Munroe Falls for a River Division showdown May 13. Results were not available at press time.
The Explorers are set to play Highland in a Division I sectional game May 14 in Medina. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
