Hudson baseball team suffers first loss

It was certainly fun while it lasted.

The Hudson baseball team suffered its first loss of the season April 16 at The Ballpark at Hudson.

The Explorers dropped a 5-2 decision to Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division rival Mayfield.

With the loss, Hudson, which was the visiting team, fell to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the Valley Division.

The Wildcats improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the division.

Mayfield scored twice in the second and fifth innings, respectively, and once in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead.

The Explorers scored their only two runs in the seventh.

Hudson finished with two hits and one error, while the Wildcats had five hits and three errors.

Mayfield ace John Schreiber, a Kent State University recruit, got the win on the mound. He finished with 11 strikeouts in seven innings of work to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Explorers' right-hander Kevin Zullo took the loss to fall to 2-1.

Hudson was scheduled to host Chardon April 17 before heading to Grafton to face Midview in a doubleheader April 19. Results of those games were not available at press time.

The Explorers are set to host Valley Division foe Twinsburg April 22 before heading to Dodge Middle School to face the Tigers April 23. Both games are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
