The Hudson baseball team opened the 2014 season in a stellar way March 29.
The Explorers earned a 2-1 victory over Chagrin Falls at Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The contest started much later than expected because of rain and some last- minute schedule changes.
Hudson right-hander Kevin Zullo got the win on the mound. He struck out 10 batters in five innings of work.
The Explorers scored a run in the third inning and a run in the fifth. Hudson left nine runners on base.
Chagrin Falls scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh.
The Explorers' Ian Swan retired the last batter of the game with a runner on second.
Swan finished with one strikeout in two innings of work to get the save.
Dan Joseph led the Explorers' offense with three hits, two stolen bases and two runs scored.
Hudson finished with six hits and three errors.
Chagrin Falls finished with three hits and one error.
The Explorers also posted a 5-1 win over Chagrin Falls in the junior varsity contest.
The varsity team was scheduled to host Northeast Ohio Conference rival Strongsville April 2. Results were not available at press time.
Hudson is set to host Parma Normandy April 2 before heading to Kent State University to play Kent Roosevelt April 4. Both varsity games are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
