Porter set to defend world title

"Showtime" Shawn Porter has set the date for his world first title defense.

The 2006 Stow-Munroe Falls High School graduate is scheduled to defend his International Boxing Federation World Welterweight title April 19 at the DC Amory in Washington, D.C. His opponent will be former light welterweight and welterweight world champion Paulie Malignaggi.

The fight will be on the undercard of the light heavyweight title bout between Bernard Hopkins and Beibut Shumenov, which will be broadcast on Showtime.

Goodson places second in Florida

The Kent State University women's golf team placed second with a score of 867 at the 14-team SunTrust Gator Women's Invitational March 16 in Gainesville, Fla.

Arizona won the competition with an 866. Hudson graduate Natalie Goodson led the Golden Flashes with a 5-over-par 215 to take second place. She shot a 74 in the final round.

Kent State also won the 36-team Kiawah Island (S.C.) Classic with a score of 892 March 3. Goodson shot a 79 in the final round.

Murphy qualifies for

NCAA championships

Hudson resident Sean Murphy, a senior at the United States Naval Academy and member of the men's swimming and diving team, qualified to swim at the NCAA Division 1 Men's Swimming Championships March 27 to 29 in Austin, Texas.

Murphy is planning to swim the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events and is a member of the qualifying 200 and 400 medley relay teams.
