Staff report

The Western Reserve Academy ice hockey team concluded the season with a 4-3 loss to Shady Side Academy in double overtime Feb. 21 in Fox Chapel, Pa.

After a scoreless first, the Pioneers scored twice. Robbie Markwell found the net a minute into the second period and then Alec Rhodes tipped in a power-play goal four minutes into the period.

Reserve held the two-goal lead until four minutes left in the period when Shady Side got its first goal.

With five minutes left in the game, Shady Side tied the game, but later took a penalty and WRA (20-9-1) was able to convert with Otto Bohan scoring to give the Pioneers a 3-2 lead with two minutes left.

Shady Side responded 45 seconds later and sent the game into overtime.

Reserve dominated the overtime, but both goalies stopped all shots on net. The game then went to a shootout.

None of the first four shooters scored and finally, Shady Side put one in and WRA was unable to respond with a goal of its own.

The Pioneers outshot Shady Side 38-25 and Christian Ciraco earned 22 saves in the loss.
