Two Hudson golfers play at Nationals
Four local golfers had the opportunity to compete for a national title on some of the nation's premiere golf courses Jan. 17 to 19.
The Northeast Ohio foursome comprised of Tom Russ and Keith Smith of Hudson, Kent Hageman of Elyria and Gerry Stadler of Cuyahoga Falls.
They teed off in the National Kidney Foundation Cadillac Golf Classic National Finals in Pebble Beach, Calif.
The foursome qualified for the finals by finishing in the top three at the NKF Cadillac Golf Classic last year at Sand Ridge Golf Club in Chardon.
They faced off against 50 other amateur golf teams from across the country. Teams played the fabled fairways and signature holes of the Monterey Peninsula: Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and The Links at Spanish Bay in the four-person, scramble format event.
WRA girls earn
victory at home
The Western Reserve Academy girls basketball team lost a 74-18 decision to Gilmour Academy Feb. 4 in Gates Mills.
The host Lady Pioneers posted a 48-17 win over Mansfield Temple Christian Jan. 31.
Reserve was scheduled to visit Cleveland Lutheran East Feb. 7. Results were not available at press time.
WRA is set to visit Aurora in its season finale Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m.
Boys hoops team falls at the buzzer
The host Western Reserve Academy boys basketball team lost a heartbreaker Feb. 4.
Troy Massa buried a short jumper at the buzzer to give Parma Normandy a 45-43 victory over the Pioneers.
Peter Barba led all scorers with 17 points. He also had seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
Massa led the Invaders with 14 points. Normandy held Reserve to a season low 27-percent shooting from the field for the game, WRA also finished with just 20 rebounds.
The Pioneers (9-5) were scheduled to visit Akron Archbishop Hoban Feb. 6 before heading to Elyria to play Open Door Christian Feb. 8. Results of those games were not available at press time.
Reserve is set to entertain Cleveland John Adams Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m.
Hockey squad wins Baron Cup debut
The Western Reserve Academy ice hockey team earned a 4-0 victory over Mayfield in the opening round of Baron Cup II Feb. 4 at the Brooklyn Ice Rink.
The Pioneers (18-7-1) are scheduled to play Cleveland Heights in the next round Feb. 7 at 8 p.m.
Sam LaFontaine had two goals and an assist and Robbie Markwell had two goals as Reserve outshot the Wildcats 42-28.
WRA goaltender Christian Ciraco had 28 saves.
Trio signs national letters of intent
Hudson seniors Ben Hart, Charlie Sockol and Kiley Merrill signed national letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers on the collegiate level.
Hart signed to play football at Davidson College in Davidson, N.C. Sockol signed to play soccer at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Merrill signed to play field hockey at Miami University in Oxford.
Schwartz honored for academics
Hudson native Gretchen Schwartz, a sophomore on the Westminster College (Pa.) women's soccer team, recently was named to the Presidents' Athletic Conference Fall 2013 Academy Honor Roll.
Schwartz is majoring in psychology.
