Sending a team largely of reserve wrestlers, the Hudson wrestling team finished seventh at the Len Pariano Invitational Jan. 11 at the Berea-Midpark High School.
Hudson earned seventh place with 106.5 points. Avon Lake won the 13-team tournament with 160 points, finishing 14 points ahead of runner-up Sheffield Brookside (146) and Stow-Munroe Falls (125).
The Explorers did not earn any individual titles at the Pariano, but had seven individual placers, four of whom took second place.
Nathan Szoch (132 pounds) may have been Hudson's most experienced wrestler at the tournament.
Szoch scored a 15-0 technical fall over Chagrin Falls' Spencer Fleming, pinned Brookside's Brandon Bellman in 5 minutes, 43 seconds and beat Berea-Midpark's Austin Hopperton 2-1 before getting pinned in the final by Avon Lake's Joey Bernosky in 2:21.
Wrestling his first tournament of the season, freshman Mitchell Soucek also took second at 126 pounds.
Soucek scored a 9-1 win over Avon Lake's Chris Chakirellis and pinned Chagrin's David Escott before upsetting top-seeded Le'Sean Dula-Banks of Brookside 10-2 in the semifinal. However, in the finals, Soucek dropped a 7-2 decision to Stow's Joe Andrassy.
Connor Milosovic also earned a second-place finish at 220.
Milosovic pinned Rocky River's Colin Shirley in 37 seconds and beat Columbia's Alex Shumaker 13-2 to reach the final. However, Brookside's Ivan Mendoza pinned Milosovic in 1:13.
Rounding out the second-place finishes for Hudson was sophomore heavyweight Dylan Carlson.
Carlson upset top-seeded Casey Huhn of Brookside 10-6 and pinned Stow's Martin Boyer in 1:05 to reach the final.
In the finals, Carlson was involved in a tight one with Roberto Sclimenti of Lakewood, but he lost a 1-0 decision.
The Explorers also got a fifth-place finish from Eric Terry (182) and sixth-place finishes from Sandor Chunyo (160) and Simon Turner.
Hudson is scheduled to visit Northeast Ohio Conference River Division rival Medina Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.
