The Hudson wrestling team opened its 2014 schedule with a bang.
The Explorers hosted the Hudson Duals Jan. 4 and finished 5-0 in the duals tournament.
Hudson was able to beat Akron Kenmore (58-9), Canton GlenOak (50-27), Mogadore Field (37-27), Richfield Revere (32-27) and Gahanna Lincoln (48-18) to win the duals.
The Explorers improved to 9-2 in dual meets this season.
Hudson head coach Joe Caniglia said his team's performance at the duals was the perfect cap to what he called "a productive winter break."
"Our kids are improving at taking the drills we are working on in practice into their matches and having more success," he said. "We will continue to work hard these next few weeks of the NOC duals' portion of the season.
"Some of our younger guys are starting to see that when you are aggressive in wrestling, you generally get better results."
The Explorers had four individuals finish 5-0 at the duals, beginning with junior Christian Owsley, who scored three pins at 113 pounds.
"He is getting better and more confident every time he steps on the mat," Caniglia said. "He is improving on from the top position which is helping him to become a more complete wrestler."
Following his podium finish at the Medina Invitational Tournament, sophomore Chris Motter also went 5-0 at 132 pounds with two technical falls, two major decisions and one decision win.
"He is doing well on his feet right now, scoring many takedowns," Caniglia said. "We continue to stress improving his top position, because being able to control people and score points from the top will really be a key for him when it gets to tournament time. You can see his confidence growing since he placed at Medina."
At 138 pounds, junior Billy Buehl went 5-0, scoring a pin, two major decisions and two decisions.
"He is opening up more and becoming more aggressive," Caniglia said of Buehl. "He is a physically strong kid that loves to lift weights and his horsepower shows in his matches."
Rounding out the 5-0 wrestlers was senior Michael Coleman, who scored two pins, a major decision and two forfeits at 160 pounds.
"We moved him up to 170 to wrestle state qualifier Zachary Lehman from Revere, "Caniglia said. "Michael did a fine job handling the match, scoring from all three positions to win by major decision [8-0].
"He is as tough as nails from the top position and as a result, people are not going to want to select bottom position against him."
Meanwhile, junior Michael Delsanter went 4-1 on the day with two pins a decision and a forfeit at 195 pounds.
"Michael was aggressive and is wrestling six minutes hard to earn points," Caniglia said. "I am pleased with his efforts and the wins he is earning are really helping his confidence."
Hudson also had sophomores Ben Boysel (126), Simon Turner (152) and Connor Milosovic (220) and senior Braden Wright (145) each finished 3-2 at the duals.
The Explorers are scheduled to return to Northeast Ohio Conference River Division action at Cuyahoga Falls Jan. 9. Varsity start time is set for 7 p.m.
Hudson is set to wrestle at the Len Pariano Tournament at Berea-Midpark High School Jan. 11. First match is set for 10 a.m.
