Westlake rallies to beat Hudson girls hoops team

The host Hudson girls basketball team fell to 5-5 on the season after losing a 58-54 decision to Westlake Dec. 30 at Ray "Buck" Hyser Gymnasium.

The Demons (10-1) scored the last 10 points of the game. Senior guard Corinne Furci gave Westlake the lead (54-53) for good when she knocked down a three-pointer with less than 30 seconds.

The Lady Explorers missed nine of 10 shots in the final eight minutes and committed some costly turnovers.

Hudson led by as many as 11 (23-12) early in the second quarter before the Demons stormed back.

Westlake rallied to take a 39-37 lead midway through the third quarter before the Lady Explorers closed the period with a 14-7 run.

Furci led the Demons with four three-pointers and a team-high 18 points.

Sophomore forward Monica Fury added 17 points and junior guard Allison Collins finished with nine points for Westlake. The Demons made seven threes and converted 11 of 16 fouls shots.

Senior guard Jackie Ulmer led Hudson with a game-high 19 points and senior post player Krissy Mummey and sophomore forward Nikki Beckham contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively. Mummey also had nine blocked shots.

The Lady Explorers also lost a 43-29 decision in the junior varsity contest.
