Western Reserve Academy senior Robbie Markwell recently signed a national letter of intent to continue his academic and lacrosse careers at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky.
Markwell chose Bellarmine, which will begin play in the Atlantic Sun Conference for the 2014-15 season, because the school offered him the chance to play lacrosse at the Division I level.
At WRA, Markwell, a Pittsburgh native, led the Pioneers last season in scoring with 32 goals and 12 assists from the attackman position and credits the level of competition and coaching for helping him fulfill his goals.
"WRA helped me develop as a player and get the opportunity to play Division I lacrosse," he said. "That would not have been possible if I had stayed in Pittsburgh at my previous high school."
In addition to lacrosse, Markwell also is a two-year captain of the Pioneer ice hockey team and was named the team's Most Valuable Player as a junior after scoring a school-record 56 goals.
Bellarmine finished the 2013 season with a 7-7 record, ranking eighth in the country in scoring defense under second-year coach Kevin Burns.
