Hockey team wins
The Western Reserve Academy ice hockey team won the Mayfield Christmas Tournament, which concluded Dec. 22 at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills.
The Pioneers won the title with an 8-0 victory over Mayfield in the championship game.
Sam LaFontaine had four goals to lead Reserve (12-3). Robbie Markwell, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, had a goal and an assist.
WRA goaltender Christian Ciraco made 13 saves, including two breakaway stops, in the nets.
The Pioneers posted an 11-1 win over Chardon Notre Dame Cathedral Latin Dec. 21.
Markwell led Reserve with five goals and Daniel Hill scored three times for WRA.
The Pioneers also earned a 6-3 victory over Parma. Reserve scored four power-play goals in the first period.
Parma trimmed its deficit to 4-3 with three unanswered goals in the second period, but WRA regained control in the final period.
Markwell had two goals and two assist and LaFontaine had one goal and two assists. Ciraco finished with 28 saves.
Reserve scored a 7-4 win over Chesterland West Geauga in its tournament debut Dec. 20.
Markwell had four goals and LaFontaine added one goal and four assists. Ciraco made 40 saves.
WRA was scheduled to visit Elyria Catholic High School Jan. 8 at North Park Ice Rink. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
