WRA boys distance team
places fifth at University
The Western Reserve Academy boys cross country team placed fifth with 127 points at the 11-team George Clements Aug. 24 at University School in Hunting Valley.
Gates Mills Gilmour Academy easily won the competition with 29 points and Shaker Heights (87), University (109) and Madison (112) finished second, third and fourth, respectively.
Hudson resident Colin Horgan led the Pioneers with a seventh-place time of 17 minutes, 59.31 seconds.
Rounding out the top five for Reserve were Patrick Mylott (23rd, 18:51.8), Joey Mylott (30th, 19:17.12), Dany Mylott (38th, 19:40.91) and Alex Wheaton (39th, 19:42.16).
"Also impressive were Peter Thewissen [20:17] in his first race ever and Cole Howard [21:25]," WRA head coach Jim Fraser said.
"It was a good start for us. Now, with one race under our belts, we should improve over the coming weeks."
The Pioneers are scheduled to run at the Avon Lake Early Bird Invitational Auf. 31 at 11 a.m.
Hudson residents lead
CVCA cross country squad
The Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy boys cross country team finished second at the 2013 Billy Goat Challenge High School 5K race Aug. 24 at Woodland Park in McDonald.
CVCA won a tiebreaker over Woodridge. Both teams finished with 62 points. McDonald placed first in the 13-team competition with 57 points.
McDonald's Bobby Johnson won the race with a time of 16 minutes, 59.2 seconds and Sugarcreek Garaway's Alex Shrock finished second (17:11.2).
Hudson residents Ben Bockoven (third, 17;12.2) and Ryan Adams (fourth, 17:18.3) led CVCA.
A total of 188 runners competed.
Luke Manzanec of Hudson placed 19th (18:24.5) for CVCA.
