Asian Sun Martial Arts' Hudson location -- the headquarters of Ohio's largest martial arts school -- has welcomed its new head instructor, John Anderson of Uniontown. Anderson is an experienced teacher and medalist who has been invited to audition for USA Taekwondo's 2013 National Team. He and his wife, United States Marine Sergeant Vanessa Anderson, are stars on Asian Sun's competition team.
"John is a veteran teacher, an accomplished martial artist and a popular instructor," said Ryan Andrachik, Grand Master and head instructor of the school, which has nine locations in Northeast Ohio.
With eight years of studying and teaching at Asian Sun, Anderson was previously head instructor at the Green location.
"Parents want the same for our students as I want for mine," said John, who has two children. "They want their children to feel special, to improve and to have fun."
A heavyweight at 6 feet, 6 inches and 280 pounds, Anderson will compete for a spot on the USAT team at the US Team Trials, which will be held in January 2014, at the Colorado Springs United States Olympics Committee Training Center in January.
He won the spot after besting three opponents at USA Taekwondo's National Championships tournament last month in Chicago.
John, 28, has been training since he was 20. He started studying to develop fitness. The 2013 Nationals was his fifth US trip to US championships. He won gold at the 2013 USAT State Championships, which took place earlier in the year in Columbus.
In her first Nationals, Vanessa won a gold medal in a sparring competition. She has previous experience in combat arts: She served in the United States Marine Corps from 2000 to 2008, attaining sergeant rank and completing a tour in Iraq.
Vanessa gave birth to their son, AJ, in January. She was back in fighting shape by March and won a gold sparring medal at the USAT State Championships.
Vanessa, now 34, began training Taekwondo at age 32. Other team moms watched the kids while they competed.
At the National championships, John was unable to continue after suffering an injury during the gold-medal match against 2012 US Team member Phillip Yun.
Asian Sun has nine schools, with locations in Aurora, Beachwood, Brecksville, Green, Hudson, Montrose, Portage Lakes, Stow and Tallmadge.
