The host Hudson baseball team improved to 20-4 after posting a 6-1 victory over Westlake in the third annual Cure Tay-Sachs Classic May 11 at Cuyahoga Community College West in Parma.
After the Demons scored the first run on the game in the top of the first inning, the Explorers countered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Westlake (10-13) added three runs in the second and one more in the fifth.
Hudson finished with seven hits and two errors. The Demons had four hits and no errors.
Right-hander Jared Hoffman (2-0) got the win on the mound with five innings of work. Joey Cahill had a triple, a double and two runs scored for the Explorers. Nanak Saran drove in two runs and Tim Kennedy had a double and drove in a run for Hudson. Kennedy, a third baseman, also played a role in eight of Westlake's outs.
SOFTBALL CLUB FALLS TO MEDINA
The Hudson softball team fell to 6-13 overall after losing a 6-1 decision to Northeast Ohio Conference rival Medina May 11 on the road.
The Lady Explorers took the early lead with one run in the top of the first inning.
It was all Bees after that.
Medina scored three runs in the bottom of the first and one apiece in the second, fourth and sixth innings, respectively.
Hudson finished with three hits and one error and the Bees had eight hits and no errors. Kelly Gough singled and scored the Lady Explorers’ only run. Aislinn Sharkey added a run-scoring single and Nikki Turner, who took the loss on the mound, also had a single for Hudson.
GOODSON'S SEASON ENDS
Hudson graduate Natalie Goodson, a sophomore on the Kent State University women’s golf team, finished in a tie for 91st with a 54-round score of 233 (75-78-80) during the 2013 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship, which concluded May 11 in Stanford, Calif.
Kent State finished in a tie for 12th (897).
WRA BOYS TRACK WINS EAST CANTON RELAYS
The Western Reserve Academy boys track and field team placed first with 91 points at the seven-team East Canton Relays.
Boardman and Middleburg Heights Midpark finished second and third with 91 and 85 points, respectively.
Ryan Hassell, Rishav Banerjee and Fede Silva placed first with a combined total of 53 feet, 6.25 inches in the long jump.
Erick Bryant, Brett Kramer and Nate Lund also took first with a combined total of 16-6 in the high jump.
The Pioneers’ other winners were the distance medley relay team of Alex Wheaton, Nick Sovich, Lund and Kramer, which posted a time of 10 minutes, 10.7 seconds and the shuttle team of Silva, Ryan Mock, Jae Min Shim and Banerjee (1:04.2).
Also placing in the top six for Reserve were:
• Shot put: John Waldon, Alex Rinker and Mat Haemer, second, 120 feet
• 400: Hassell, Johnny Saucier, Bryant and Kendall Anderson, second, 46.4
• 6,400: Rodin Schimper, Max Borrmann, Till Bethge and Colin Horgan, second, 19:48.6

• 1,600: Saucier, Hassell, Banerjee and Bryant, third, 3:39
• 800: Bob Wen, Anderson, Shim and Bryant, third, 1:37.5
• Pole vault: Kevin Ly, Wen and Billy Walsh, fourth, 27-6
• Sprint medley: Wen, Saucier, Anderson and Shim, fifth, 1:42.2
• Discus: Haemer, Waldon and Robert Stephens, sixth, 307-9
PIONEERS BASEBALL FINISHES 16-9
The Western Reserve Academy baseball team finished the 2013 season with a 5-2 loss to Benedictine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
The Pioneers finished 16-9.
RESERVE BOYS LACROSSE LOSES TO CRANBROOK
The WRA boys lacrosse team dropped to 6-9 on the season after losing a 13-10 decision to Cranbrook (Mich.) May 11 at Hawken School in Gates Mills.
