Scores: Hudson boys basketball team holds off Highland

The Hudson boys basketball team earned a Division I sectional title after posting a 35-33 victory over Medina Highland March 2 at Copley High School.

With the win, the Explorers (19-4), winners of 12 straight, are scheduled to play Stow-Munroe Falls March 7 at 7 p.m. Stow upset second-seeded Twinsburg 63-57 in triple overtime.

Zack Brandy and Ben Gedeon each had 11 points to lead Hudson. Gedeon also had six rebounds in the fourth quarter.

Alex Mushock's layup with 1 minute, 7 seconds left in the game put the Explorers up for good (30-28).

GYMNASTS COMPETE AT STATE MEET

The Hudson gymnastics team placed third with 140.2 points at the Division I state meet March 1 at Hilliard Bradley High School.

Brecksville-Broadview Heights won its 10th straight state title with 148.33 points and Strongsville placed second (142.43).

The individual competition, which featured Logan Custer, Mackenzie Miller and Riley Skinner, took place March 2.

Custer placed 11th on the floor exercise with a score of 9.075 and 13th on the uneven parallel bars (8.725).

Miller finished 20th on the bars (8.625) and 25th on vault (8.95). Skinner captured 14th on the balance beam (8.85).

GIRLS BASKETBALL SQUAD FALLS SHORT AGAINST TWINSBURG

The second-seeded Hudson girls basketball team lost a 55-52 decision to top-seeded Twinsburg in a Division I district title game March 2 at Ellet High School in Akron.

The Lady Explorers finished 20-6 on the season. The Lady Tigers improved to 26-0.

Twinsburg concluded the third quarter with an 8-0 run to cut Hudson's lead to 38-37. After Hannah Boesinger hit a three-pointer for Hudson early in the fourth period, the Lady Tigers went on a 10-0 run to take a 47-41 lead.

Lady Explorers' point guard Kelly Gough knocked down a three to cut Twinsburg's advantage to 54-52 with 3.3 seconds left. Lady Tigers' forward Mercedes Hobbs knocked down 1-of-2 free throws with 2 seconds left and Hudson was unable to get a shot off on the final possession.

Boesinger led all scorers with 25 points. She made all nine of her foul shots.

After a slow start, Twinsburg guard Ashley Morrissette scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half. She had eight in the fourth quarter. Lady Tigers' post Char-dell Dunnigan had 13 points and eight rebounds and guard Baleigh Reid had 12 points and five steals for Twinsburg.

Guard Brynne Drohan scored nine points on a trio of three-pointers for the Lady Explorers.

Hudson jumped out to a 16-2 first-quarter lead. But the Lady Explorers scored just four points in the second quarter and the Lady Tigers cut Hudson's lead to 24-22 early in the third period.

The Lady Explorers then went on a 10-0 run that was capped by a layup from Boesinger.

During its 10-0 run in the fourth quarter, Twinsburg got three straight steals. On two of those thefts, Morrissette and Reid got fast-break layups. Reid's layup gave the Lady Tigers their first lead (43-41) with 6 minutes, 35 seconds left in the game.

COLEMAN, TILEY PLACE AT STATE WRESTLING MEET

The Hudson wrestling team had two athletes place sixth at the Division I state meet March 2 at Value City Arena in Columbus.

Michael Coleman finished fourth at 160 pounds and Danny Tiley placed sixth at 182 pounds.
