Scores: Hudson girls basketball team gets past Mentor

The host Hudson girls basketball team earned a 64-56 victory over Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division victory over Mentor Jan. 5 at Hudson High School's Ray "Buck" Hyser Gymnasium.

With the win, the Lady Explorers improved to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in the Valley Division. The Lady Cardinals dropped to 7-4 overall and 1-4 in the division.

Hudson, which has won five straight games, led most of the way despite being outrebounded 44-28. The Lady Explorers scored the last 11 points of the first quarter to take a 22-15 lead. They led by as many as 13 (47-34) late in the third quarter.

Jackie Ulmer led Hudson with a game-high 20 points and Hannah Boesinger and Kelly Gough added 16 and 13 points, respectively. Courtney Schutz led Mentor with 15 points.

WRESTLERS FINISH 5-0 AT HUDSON DUALS

2013 could not have started better for the Hudson wrestling squad.

Following the Explorers' rout of Cuyahoga Falls Jan. 3, the team hosted the Hudson Duals Jan. 5.

Five matches later, the Explorers could claim to be undefeated in the new year.

Hudson went 5-0 at the duals, beating Field 54-15, Akron Kenmore 62-12, Nordonia 36-23, Shaker Heights 63-7 and Richfield Revere 35-34.

The Explorers improved to 8-4 in dual meets this season.

STRONGSVILLE EKES OUT WIN AGAINST GYMNASTS

The Hudson gymnastics team suffered its first Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division loss of the season by the smallest of margins.

Strongsville edged out the host Lady Explorers 139.55-139.15 Jan. 5 at Flytz Gymnastics in Cuyahoga Falls. Medina also participated and finished with 132.85 points.

Mackenzie Miller led Hudson with a third-place all-around score of 35.55 points. Teammate Logan Custer finished fifth (34.5).

Miller finished second on vault (9.15) and third on the balance beam (8.9). Custer won the floor exercise (9.35) and third on bars (8.9).

Also faring well for the Lady Explorers were Teghan Piper, who finished fourth on the floor (9.05) and fifth on bars (8.8), Meghan Urbancic (fourth on beam, 8.9) and Jenni Spencer (fifth on vault, 8.8).
