The Hudson wrestling team scored 61.5 points to finish in a tie for 20th place with Lancaster at the 39-team Medina Invitational Dec. 28.
Lakewood St. Edward won the competition with 286 points and Perry (237) and Detroit Catholic Central (225) finished second and third, respectively.
"We wanted to get into one of the bigger tournaments and get better exposure of the highest level of competition we could," Explorers head coach Joe Caniglia said. "We have a lot of kids who tend to wrestle to their level of competition.
"It was a good experience in terms of reaching a higher level, positioning and situational wrestling."
Micahel Coleman led the Explorers with a fifth-place finish at 160 pounds. He finished 4-2 at the tournament. Zach Vehar (195), Sam Semenczuk (152) and Nathan Gregory (132) each won three matches for Hudson.
"If they would have won their last matches, they would have placed," Caniglia said.
Hadley Vadeyak (106), Chris Motter (126), Danny Tiley (182) and Gabe Vehar (220) each won two matches for the Explorers.
"We had a lot of kids winning matches and some were pleasant surprises," Caniglia said. "I figured our better kids would win some matches and be OK, but a lot of younger kids won matches.
"It was a good effort going forward into January. This is the grinding part of the season. The season gets longer and kids get sick and get injuries. The winter break gets kids out of their normal routine and it's more challenging. They just have to stay focused."
Hudson is scheduled to entertain Northeast Ohio Conference River Division rival Cuyahoga Falls Jan. 3 at 7 p.m.
The Explorers are set to host the Hudson Duals Jan. 4 at 9 a.m. Mogadore Field, Akron Kenmore, Nordonia, Richfield Revere, Painesville Riverside and Shaker Heights are expected to participate in the Hudson Duals.
