Staff report
Western Reserve Academy senior Brian Czerwonka recently signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Robert Morris University (Pa.) to play lacrosse.
Czerwonka, a goalie, chose Robert Morris because of the emphasis Colonials’ men’s head lacrosse coach Andrew McMinn places on defense, as well as the school’s strong nursing program.
“I decided on Robert Morris because I like the coaching philosophy and I wanted to go somewhere new,” said Czerwonka, who plans to study to become an anesthetist. “The way they play gives them a really strong defense and, as a goalie, I like that.”
At WRA, Czerwonka is a Student Ambassador and a prefect with academic interests in math and science.
On the lacrosse field, he has earned several honors, including being named to ESPN’s High School Watch List for 2013; being named a 2012 Brine National High School All-American, earning a spot on the Ohio Midwest Regional team in the Brine National Lacrosse Classic; and being an honorable mention selection to the 2012 Midwest Scholastic Lacrosse Coaches Association team.
“In lacrosse, every team needs at least a good goalie,” said WRA head boys lacrosse coach Kevin O’Brien. “Fortunately for WRA, Brian Czerwonka is a great goalie, making our team competitive with the best in the Midwest. Brian is not only talented — he will outwork anyone and absolutely loves the game.
“A coach can’t ask for more, especially in goal, than Brian Czerwonka.”
Czerwonka credits his teammates and the strength of WRA’s schedule for his improvement on the field.
“I really developed as a player last year by working over the winter with Mike Gulasey [WRA Class of 2012] and practicing stopping his shot,” Czerwonka said. “We also had one of the toughest schedules in the Midwest, which was a real plus.”
The Robert Morris lacrosse team posted a program-record 11 wins in 2012 and went undefeated in the Northeast Conference.
McMinn earned conference Coach of the Year honors as he helped 10 of his student-athletes earn all-conference honors. The Colonials also earned the conference’s Team GPA and Team Sportsmanship Awards.
