Barley named to national ballot

Hudson graduate Zach Barley, a junior safety on the Baldwin-Wallace University (Berea) football team, recently was selected first-team Capital One Academic All-District 7 and qualifies for the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America national ballot.

Barley, a neuroscience and psychology major with a 3.85 grade point average, is the starting safety. He is a three-year varsity player.

This season, Barley has a career-high 44 total tackles, including 21 solo stops and two tackles for a loss.

He also leads the Yellow Jackets with three interceptions and eight pass breakups. Barley has 64 career tackles, including four for a loss, and three pickoffs.

In the classroom, he is a Dean's List student, a member of the Alpha Lambda and Chi Alpha Sigma honoraries and a Jacket Scholar.

He also belongs to the Pre-Med and Neoroscience Club.

Globetrotters coming

to Cleveland

The Harlem Globetrotters are scheduled to visit Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland Dec. 27 at 7 p.m.

Fans will decide the rules for the game that could affect the final outcome.

This could be anything from playing with two basketballs at once, to getting double the points for each basket made.

Junior Olympic club hosts tryouts

The Buckeyefire Junior Olympic Volleyball Club is offering tryouts at Nordonia High School.

The tryouts are scheduled to take place Nov. 17 and 18 for its 16-and-younger and 17-and-younger girls teams.

The tryouts are set to take place from 1 to 4 p.m.

Players only need to attend one of the tryouts.

Hoops scheduled

The Black Friday Basketball Shootout Tournament is scheduled to take place Nov. 23 in Akron.

This event is for boys and girls in fourth, fifth or sixth grades. All teams are guaranteed three games and winners will receive awards. The cost is $175.

Simpson fares well

Hudson native Joe Simpson is a member of the Baldwin-Wallace University (Berea) men's swimming and diving team.

He was part of the winning 200-meter medley relay team that won with a time of 1 minute, 39.95 seconds during the Yellow Jackets' 125-80 win over John Carroll University (Cleveland) Nov. 9 at Hammond Natatorium in Alliance.

Simpson also won the 100 butterfly (54.71).
