KIERNAN, Ellen Regina (Flynn)

Ellen Kiernan passed away peacefully with her family at her side on January 4, 2017. She was born in New York City to the late Alma and Charles Flynn. After high school graduation she worked at Encyclopedia Britannica in New York City prior to entering Mary Immaculate Hospital Nursing School where she graduated as a Registered Nurse. Upon graduation she worked at several hospitals in NYC administering care and compassion to her patients, a gift she maintained for the remainder of her life. After nursing she became a Pan American stewardess for their international routes. She enjoyed extensive travel throughout Europe and Africa and embraced all cultures.

In July of 1957 she was married to Vincent J. Kiernan of Belle Harbor, NY and they settled in Virginia with subsequent moves to New Jersey, Maryland, Ohio and settled in Marco Island full time in 1992.

Ellen lived her life with grace, dignity and charm and was a friend to all. Throughout her children's formative years she volunteered for numerous causes and organization to benefit her communities, children's schools, sports leagues, art leagues and her church. She had many interests and encouraged her children to do the same. She was fiercely loyal to her husband and children and embraced each day with great enthusiasm while maintaining her strong faith. She will be sorely missed by her family, but her spirt and many memories will be savored by the entire extended family.

She leaves her beloved husband of 59 years, Vincent J. Kiernan of Marco Island, children and spouses, Vincent (Sarah) Kiernan of Washington D.C., Regina (Mike) Gade of Park City, Utah, Michael (Sharon) of Boston, MA, Kelley (Mike deceased) Harper of Chicago, Il and Kathlene (Kevin) of Los Angeles, CA, and her grandchildren, Molly, Vince, Teddy, Ellie, Matt, Meaghan, Grace, Liza, Jack, Katie, Maddie and Tegan. She also leaves her extended family and many, many friends who were an integral and important part of her life.

Services were held at San Marco Catholic Church on Marco Island, FL on Saturday, January 7, followed by a reception where her children, family and friends held a tribute to Ellen. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ellen's name to: San Marco Catholic Church, 851 San Marco Road, Marco Island, FL 34145 or Ave Maria University, 5050 Ave Maria Blvd, Ave Maria, Florida 34142.
