Ann “Peggy” Clewell (nee Grissom) a long time resident of Hudson, Ohio passed away quietly August 28, 2016. She was 88 years old.
She was born in Golconda, Pope County, Illinois, on the Ohio River on October 31, 1927. The oldest of 12 children she spent her childhood in Simpson, Illinois. The family relocated to Hudson, Ohio the week of December 7th, 1941 where they established a dairy farm on Aurora Road. Ann attended Hudson High School.
She married Richard Clewell who was a faculty member and coach at Western Reserve Academy. They lived on campus and raised their three children. Ann and the children spent hours rooting for Richie’s teams from the side lines.
She worked at the Western Reserve Academy Bookstore for 25 years and served as the chief SAT/ACT exam proctor at the Academy.
She volunteered for the Red Cross blood mobile in Hudson, for the Friends of the Hudson Library & Historical Society book sale, and served as a precinct poll worker for many years. She was a member of the League of Women Voters.
Ann had lifelong friendships. She was a wonderful correspondent who preferred a fountain pen and ink. She read the newspaper and tackled the crossword puzzle on a daily basis. She cheered for all the Cleveland sports teams and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ann’s legacy is one of devotion to her three children. Plus she assumed the role of aunt and godmother very seriously. She found joy in the accomplishments of her nieces and nephews. Being a grandmother to Annie became her full time occupation. The two of them looked at the world with wonderment and an enormous measure of humor. They were kindred spirits. Johnny’s Diner in Hudson was a favorite eatery of Ann’s. The family thanks the staff of Briarwood and the Summa Palliative Care Unit at City Hospital for the attentive care that Ann received.
She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Eli Clewell; her parents Paul and Leah Grissom, and by her sisters Norma Jean Richter, Sue Thomas, and Alice Patricia McGrath. She is survived by her sons Christopher Clewell (Cuyahoga Falls) and Michael Clewell (Hilton Head); by her daughter Rebecca Clewell (Jacksonville); granddaughter Annie Marie Clewell (Hilton Head); brothers, John (Helen) Grissom, James (Elaine) Grissom, Donald (Marilyn) Grissom, Jack (Nancee) Grissom, and Jerry (Peggy) Grissom; sisters Sandra Skinner, Marjie (John) Origlio and Deborah Grissom; brothers-in-law George Thomas, Patrick McGrath, and Andre Clewell; as well as many nieces and nephews, and friends.
