Frances M. Cavanagh Smith (Mame), the daughter of John and Mildred Scherrman, was born on Aug. 27, 1920 in Farley, Iowa. She died on Aug. 6, 2014 at age 93. A private interment is scheduled for Aug. 22 at 2 p.m. in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
Family will receive friends at Seton Catholic School Chapel, 6923 Stow Road, Hudson, Ohio at 10 a.m. on Aug. 23. A liturgy to celebrate her life will be at 11 a.m.
Franceswas a graduate of the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Dubuque, IA. She enlisted in the Army Nurse Corp during WWII and served as a 1st Lieutenant in Cheltnam, England. She also worked in a children's home on her days off where she served children who were displaced from the cities that were bombed.
On her return from Englandshe married John Cavanagh and settled in Kenmore, NY where she raised their three children, Mary Ann Camann (Thomas Shillock) of Atlanta, GA; Paul (Marie)Cavanagh of Fenton, MI; and Patricia (Ralph)Zuponcic of Hudson. She continued her nursing careeras a labor and delivery nurse at Kenmore Mercy Hospital, and later served as a nurse in a doctor's private practice. Following the death of her husband in 1971 she married Dayton Smith in 1978.
She was known as "Sis" by her family and friends but also known as "Mame" by her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many friends.
She enjoyed travel, golf, playing cards, and family events. Her zest for life touchedcountless individuals.She relocated to Hudson in 1998 and was a resident of Macedonia at the time of her passing.
She will be rememberedwith love and gratitudeby her children, family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers. Robert and Paul Scherrman; and son-in-law Mike Linko. Sheis survived by herdaughters, son and step-daughter Jacci Reed; 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren,brothers Larry and Jack Scherrman, sister Sharon Osterhaus and many nieces and nephews.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Summit Point Assisted Living and Crossroads Hospice for their dedicated care and support.
