Minerva Shumate Life-long resident of Hudson

Minerva Shumate, a life-long resident of Hudson, died Monday, June 23, 2014, after an extended battle with cancer at Akron General VNS Hospice Care Center in Copley Township.

She was born in Akron on March 20, 1949.

Ms. Shumate was preceded in death by her mother, Arthurine (Cole) Shumate, and father, Everett Lee Shumate. She attended and graduated from Hudson High School and received a bachelor's degree from Ohio Northern University.

For nearly 40 years Ms. Shumate was a Commercial insurance underwriter and insurance risk manager working initially for Aetna Life and Casualty Insurance Co. and most recently with Aleris International, Goodyear Tire and Rubber and Phillips Medical Systems Inc.

Ms. Shumate was an active member of the Hudson Community, serving as a member and officer on Hudson Municipal Planning and Architectural Planning Committees and Hudson Schools Endowment Board and Committees. She also was a member and officer of the Akron Community Foundation.

Ms. Shumate is survived by siblings, Reginald (Ramona) Wilson of Ingelwood, California, Sarah Ellen Shumate PhD of Hollywood, Florida, Lee Everett (Diana) Shumate of North Canton and Alfred Eugene Shumate of Hudson.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to Hudson Public Schools Endowment Fund-Everett Shumate Scholarship Fund or the American Cancer Society.

A memorial service is scheduled for July 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Hudson, 21 Aurora St. in Hudson.
