John William Jeffers, Attorney and former Council member

John William Jeffers passed away on April 11, 2014, after a brief illness that struck just two days after he received an award for 50 years of exemplary service to the Ohio legal community. Throughout Mr. Jeffer's career, he always represented his clients with the utmost professionalism and dignity, with never a question as to his methods or ethics. He served his clients with skill and efficiency and maintained a relationship with many over the years who thought so highly of him that they were proud to also call him their friend. Mr. Jeffers was an excellent representative as an "Officer of the Court" and a managing partner at Weston Hurd LLP, where he practiced until his retirement. He has been a treasured mentor and a friend to many and was never too busy to assist someone that needed the benefit of his vast knowledge and experience. There are many people who would not be where they are today without Mr. Jeffer's guidance.

Mr. Jeffers was born May 11, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in Forest Hills, New York. He graduated cum laude from Northwood Preparatory School in Lake Placid, New York, in 1954; received his A.B. degree, cum laude, from Harvard University in 1958; and received his J.D. Degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1964. John honorably and proudly served his country as a captain in the United States Marine Corps and would gladly have followed a re-call to duty following 911 stating (having grown up in New York) -- "My City, My Country and I am a Marine!"

Mr. Jeffers was active in his community, having served as a city Councilman for the city of Hudson for nine years, and was an avid sports enthusiast. He was a devoted family man, loving husband, father and grandfather.

Mr. Jeffers is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen; and sons, Michael D. Jeffers (Toni), Thomas W. Jeffers (Elizabeth Knefelkamp), James B. Jeffers (Aimee), and John P. Jeffers (Laura); stepchildren, Thomas Bauer (Susan), Brandon Bauer, and Ashley Brawdy (Brian). John is also survived by the mother of his children, Mary Ann Jeffers; and his grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Mary, Luke and Caleb Jeffers; step-grandchildren, Shelby, Matthew and Niko Bauer and Blyden, Parker and Paige Brawdy; along with his nephew, David Jeffers; and great niece, Lauren Jeffers; and the following: Joseph W. Murphy (father-in-law); sisters-in-law, Sheila Adamson (James), Mary Lauer (AJ), Susan Evans (David) and Rebecca Brown (Hal); and brothers-in-law, Joseph Murphy (Joanne), Robert Murphy (Jennifer Cottingham) and Michael Murphy (Valerie) and their families.

Mr. Jeffers was pre-deceased by his parents, William and Thelma Jeffers and his brother, Robert Jeffers.

The family would like to thank Mr. Jeffers's friends at Western Reserve Racquet Club who provided CPR immediately on the tennis court and the excellent and caring nurses, doctors and staff in the CICU at University Hospitals.

There will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, April 14, 2014, at 10 a.m. at St. Colman's Church, 2027 W. 65th St. Cleveland, Ohio 44102. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or to St. Colman's Church. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
