John Robin Altdoerffer, born June 10, 1945, died Feb. 10, 2013 at his residence in Columbus. A Youngstown native, he graduated from Western Reserve Academy in 1964, and went on to Hiram College. He served as a medical corpsman with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and later worked as a nurse, a teacher and a soccer coach.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Allan and Eleanor Jane Altdoerffer. He leaves his four children: daughter Carrie Fish and husband Chris of Columbus, son Everette Altdoerffer and wife Melissa of Oklahoma City, Okla., daughter Rebekah McQuade and husband Luke of Portland, Ore., and son Cassius Altdoerffer; and his grandchildren - Allison, Luke and Bryn Fish.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Vietnam Veterans of America. His marker will be installed at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery but he chose to donate his body to the Department of Anatomy at Ohio State University medical school. Instead of a funeral home service, he left instructions for a party which will be May 18 at the home of his daughter Carrie Fish, 7673 Foxboro Lane, Columbus, 43235.
They plan to set up a tent in the backyard, have plenty of food and drinks, and set aside a block of time for an informal memorial service. Anyone who wants to share their memories of Mr. Altdoerffer is encouraged to do so then. The gathering will begin at 1 p.m., with the memorial program at 4 p.m. Those who plan to attend should notify Fish by May 10 at 1-614-218-7237 or email her at email@example.com.
