Ted Volchko, 97, died March 9, 2013.
Mr. Volchko was born in Braddock, Penn. and moved to Akron as an infant. He was married to the late Ann Volchko, his loving wife of more than 60 years.
At 21, he took full responsibility for raising all nine of his brothers and sisters, allowing the family to stay together. As Del, the youngest brother commented, "Most of the kids in my class didn't know we did not have parents, we just didn't talk about it… Nothing was given to us, but we still survived." This obviously was a testimonial to that age of surviving rather than living. That same standard was practiced as he raised his own family, albeit with a softer approach.
In addition to helping raise his brothers and sisters, Mr. Volchko studied accounting at the University of Akron and went on to hold various positions, including CFO, in the accounting departments of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and its subsidiaries for 44 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ann, son David and siblings Emil, Andrew and Paul. He is survived by son Del; daughter Delores (Joe) Rafier and grandchildren Kari Carvaines, Todd Rafier and great-grandson Cameron Carvaines. He is also survived by brothers Edward and Del; sisters Irene, Pauline, Helen and Ann, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Laurel Lake for the wonderful care that they have given our Dad over the years.
Mass of the Christian Burial took place at St. Mary Catholic Church in Hudson with Fr. Kevin Elbert as Celebrant. Interment was at All Saints Cemetery in Northfield. Arrangements were handled by Redmon Funeral Home.
