The visiting Hudson boys soccer team lost a 1-0 decision to Western Reserve Conference rival Mayfield Aug. 26.

The Wildcats (0-1) scored both goals in the first half.

Once Mayfield got on the board, Hudson was unable to come back.

“We couldn’t break down their defense.” Explorers’ first-year head coach Greg Shoults said. “Mayfield didn’t do anything differently than when I scouted them.”

Shoults believe his team made crucial mistakes on both goals.

“We had two defensive breakdowns which led to their two goals,” he said.

“On one play, they threw in the ball and a player flicked it on to the top of the box and we didn’t pick up the midfielder who had a wide-open look at the goal and scored from the top of the box.

“The second goal came from a miss-hit pass that went to the back post. We didn’t track back and left the midfielder open on the back post and he scored.”

Mayfield’s offense stalled in the second half. It didn’t matter.

“Other than that, Mayfield didn’t do much as far as creating scoring chances. We had opportunities on free kicks outside the box, but couldn’t get the ball on goal.”

The Explorers (0-1) are scheduled to host Jackson Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.

They are set to entertain Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary Sept. 4 at 3 p.m.
