Schools Not Telling All To Citizens /TaxpayersMay 5, 2010
Does anyone know of a commercial industry that allows for the accumulation of hundreds of sick leave days from one year to the next year? Can you who work in industry accumulate your sick leave? The Hudson School District(HSD)does! It has been obligated for many years by employee union contracts providing this very expensive but archane benefit. Surprise! The HSD is obligated by the same contracts and benefit program to lump-sum cash-out a percentage of accumulated unused sick days when an employee retires. This benefit may even be an unfunded liability that does not show on the books until it is consumed by the employee at retirement. How might this cost over the next five years as "baby-boomer" teaching staff retire? How about millions of $$$ since it is based on salary at the time of retirement. Isn't it coincidental that while the HSD not insolvent, it is proported to need a sum via new five year levy that is close to a calculation that can be made for the number of expected retirees cashing-out their sick days? The Hudson taxpayer should demand that the HSD School Board cancel this expensive benefit immediately upon expiration of current contracts and not allow it to be negotiated into any future contract.
