DAR contests
open to students
The David Hudson Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution is sponsoring two contests for youth for the 2009-2010 school year. All students, including those who are home schooled, as well as those in Hudson City Schools and local private and parochial schools, may participate. Youth groups such as the Scouts are also invited to participate.
The first contest is the American History essay contest for grades five through eight.
The topic this year is "The Completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad," which celebrates the 140th anniversary of its completion.
Students should write an eyewitness account using the following instructions, "Describe how you felt on May 10, 1869, when the golden spike was driven at Promontory Summit, Utah, to celebrate the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad. Pretend you are either a settler planning to use the train to travel to your new home in the West, an Irish or Chinese worker who helped build the line, or a Native American whose way of life was greatly affected by the railroad."
The second contest is the Junior American Citizen contest.
The categories available are: poster design, stamp design, banner design, photographic essay, poetry, short story and community service. All categories are individual entry categories, except the banner category, which must be a group project, and the community service category, which can be either a group or an individual activity. The JAC contest is open to students in preschool through 12th grade.
Preschool and kindergarten children may only participate in the two group categories: banner and community service project.
This year's JAC theme is "America, Land of the Free and Home of the Brave." Students are to express how brave men and women from the past or present gave us the freedoms we enjoy today.
Parents can obtain a copy of the instructions and guidelines by contacting American History and JAC Chairman, Patricia Hall at pathallhudson@msn.com or 330-650-0667.
