Learn to play tennis
and racquet sports

HCER is offering teens and adults the opportunity to learn to play tennis and racquet sports. Both programs are at Western Reserve Racquet and Fitness Club, 11013 Aurora-Hudson Road in Streetsboro.

Intro to Racquet Sports for students in sixth through eighth grade is an instructional program for beginner level youth to introduce them to tennis, squash and racquetball. Participants will be divided into small groups for individualized instruction. Classes meet Mondays from Oct. 27 through Dec. 15 (no class Nov. 24) from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Intro to Tennis is an instructional program for beginner level adults with little or no formal tennis training. Small group instruction offers reduced court rates for participants. Classes meet Mondays from Oct. 27 through Dec. 15 from 6 to 7 p.m. or Tuesdays, Oct. 28 through Dec. 16 from 10 to 11 a.m. No classes will take place Nov. 24 or 25.

Learn to draw

Area students may learn to draw in classes from HCER.

Classes are offered for preschoolers to fifth-graders with instructors from Young Rembrandts.

Young Rembrandts Cartoon Drawing for fourth- and fifth-graders allows participants to create silly characters, funny expressions and draw sequences which tell jokes.

Young Rembrandts Cartoon Drawing Classes meet for six Mondays from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Oct. 27 through Dec. 1, at East Woods School.

Young Rembrandts Elementary Drawing Classes for second-graders uses the Young Rembrandts step-by-step drawing method to teach any child how to draw. All materials are provided.

Young Rembrandts Elementary Drawing Classes for second-graders meets for six Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. from Nov. 4 through Dec. 9 at Ellsworth Hill Art Room. (Third-graders may participate in this class if they can provide their own transportation).

Young Rembrandts Preschool Drawing Classes for children ages 3 1/2 to 5 years concentrate on the skills of drawing and coloring, but also work on developing fine motor skills, focus, listening, staying on task, spatial organization and patience. All materials are provided.

Young Rembrandt's Preschool Drawing Classes meet for six Tuesdays from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. from Nov. 4 through Dec. 9 at the Summa Wellness Institute, Children's Room (use the Hudson Drive entrance).

College prep test courses slated

HCER is offering two college admission test prep courses to prepare students for taking the ACT and SAT with instructor David Diciccio. Class time is all test-taking instruction covering English, vocabulary, math, reading, science and writing. Successful completion requires attending every class hour and doing all do-at-home practice exercises. Workbooks contain real ACT and SAT questions. SAT book includes special online access. ACT courses are primarily for juniors and seniors. Combined ACT/SAT course is primarily for juniors. Students should bring their calculators. Younger students or students with special testing needs should contact the instructor before registering. For more information about the classes contact Diciccio at 1-800-937-6388.

ACT test prep classes meet for five Tuesdays (13 hours) from Oct. 28 to Dec. 2 (except Nov. 25). Classes meet from 6 to 8:35 p.m. at Hudson High School. This course ends in time for the Dec. 13 ACT.

The Combined ACT/SAT test prep class meets for seven Tuesdays (21 hours) from Oct. 28 to Dec. 16 (except Nov. 25). Classes meet from 6 to 9:05 p.m. at Hudson High School. The course ends prior to the Dec. 13 ACT and the Jan. 24 SAT.

SchoolzOut

HCER's SchoolzOut has gone from a program for working parents to send kids to on school holidays, to an activity-packed alternative to staying at home.

Students in kindergarten through sixth grade will have opportunities to visit the Great Lakes Science Center, go ice skating, swimming or bowling, catch a movie or visit the Marble Museum, all accompanied by lunch treats such as pizza, subs or a trip to a buffet restaurant.

The first SchoolzOut trip of the year will take place Oct. 17, with a trip to the Great Lakes Science Center including the Omnimax theatre.

All transportation is provided from East Woods School, and admission and a hot lunch are included in the $35 fee.

The SchoolzOut event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. After care is available for an additional fee.

SchoolzOut also helps out on half days of school, with a swim and Lunch program set for Oct. 31.
