Hudson -- Just a handful were on the Lexi-Comp Inc. payroll when the medical publishing company had its beginnings 30 years ago in Macedonia.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the corporation has grown to more than 130 employees since 1978.
Following a move that took company operations to Boston Heights for several years, Lexi-Comp relocated 19 years ago to its present Hudson site: a 37,000 square-foot facility at 1100 Terex Road.
"The community of Hudson provides a great location for our business. Our employees and clients enjoy the relatively easy commute and favorable environment provided by the city," said Robert Kerscher, Lexi-Comp chairman and founder.
Over the past three decades, the local medical publishing company that provides pharmacological point-of-care information to medical professionals also increased its workforce to more than 130 employees.
"Lexi-Comp's publishing success is the result of our strong technical expertise. Computer technology significantly influences the future of medical publishing. Authoring systems, database creation and dissemination of electronic knowledge are our core competencies and the future of Lexi-Comp," said Kerscher.
Publishing successes include the use of Lexi-Comp's technology and databases at 15 of the top 18 hospitals ranked on U.S. News and World Report's list of 2007 Honor Roll Hospitals.
In 2007, Lexi-Comp received the Leading EDGE Award from The Entrepreneurs Economic Development through Growth and Entrepreneurship.
More than 500,000 clinicians worldwide access the local company's information via the Internet, mobile devices and health information systems. Lexi-Comp also has an extensive publication library, according to the company's Web site.
A Hudson resident, Kerscher, 60, said he is pleased at his company's accomplishments.
"We are dedicated every day to improving information health care providers rely upon to improve patient care decisions," he said.
Declining to disclose specific profit or income tax figures, company officials said Lexi-Comp is consistently profitable and they expect continued profit growth in the future."
Lexi-Comp is not one of Hudson's top 10 revenue-generating businesses, according to Jody Roberts, city of Hudson Communications Manager.
With expansions in 1999 and 2005 taking company headquarters from 11,000 to 37,000 square feet, there are no present plans for new additions, according to officials.
But future business opportunities are looking bright, said Kerscher.
"We see great growth ahead for our business and improvements in patient safety and outcomes because of what we provide," he added.
Celebrations of Lexi-Comp's 30-year milestone will include a Blackberry giveaway each day of November for customers. A 30th anniversary lunch and company celebration for employees is scheduled for Nov. 14.
To further recognize the company's anniversary, employees are being asked to participate in area charities, including St. John's Episcopal Church's soup kitchen or food delivery, an Akron Habitat for Humanity project, and Laurel Lake Retirement Community's "Life Story" book publication project for residents.
