Civil War Roundtable meets May 14

On May 14, Ohio native Dan Rudary will talk to the Cuyahoga Valley Civil War Round Table on "Confederates in the Attic: Observations on the Unfinished Civil War in Richmond, Va." The 7:30 p.m. meeting at the Peninsula library is free and the public is welcome.

Now a sophomore majoring in history at the University of Richmond, Rudary's historical papers won state awards and sent him to national competitions before he even graduated from high school. An Eagle Scout, Rudary also found time to re-enact as a Confederate soldier with the Company A of the 5th Texas.

"Even though I go to school in the capitol of the Confederacy, the vast majority of the students are from out of state and aren't all Southern," Rudary said. "Interesting things go on in the city. We would never see issues about the Confederate flag or a controversy around putting up a statue of Lincoln here, but these things are still a big deal to a certain extent in the South."

Rudary will touch on topics such as the breaking up of the Museum of the Confederacy, future 150th anniversary celebrations for the Civil War hosted by Virginia, another fight over the Confederate flag at the Virginia statehouse, Robert E. Lee's reputation among contemporary Virginians and the war's latest casualty -- a Civil War weapons collector recently killed by an exploding shell.

He also will talk about Confederate documents, newspapers and books available in the University of Richmond archives.

Rudary plans to attend law school after college and currently participates in the university's mock trial team. He will be working as a research assistant at the university this summer and studying abroad at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland in the fall.
