Church Women United celebrate friendship
May Friendship Day, sponsored by Church Women United of North Summit County, will be at the First Congregational Church of Hudson, 47 Aurora St., May 2. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the annual salad luncheon at 11:30 a.m.
Mary Ann Smith and the Congregational women will be hostesses for the lunch. Each person attending is requested to bring a salad to share. May Friendship Day is open to all.
The theme for the day is "God's Wisdom Inspires Hospitality." Phyllis Witt of First Congregational Church will share "Plant a seed of hospitality -- reap a bouquet of friendship."
The group also will explore hospitality in the home and community and hospitality by sharing skills, knowledge and talents.
Church Women United also will recognize the Least Coin program, a global movement of prayer, justice and reconciliation.

Churches gather for World Day of Prayer
In recognition of the National Day of Prayer, Hudson's churches, through the ministerial association, are sponsoring a prayer breakfast May 1 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at Hudson Community Chapel, at the intersection of Terex Road and Route 303.
Local church members and Hudson residents are encouraged to come together at this event to pray.
A breakfast buffet will be served, followed by a program of music, guest speakers from the community and prayer led by pastors from Hudson churches.

Dwelling Place
to discuss prayer
The Rev. Steve Hutchinson, pastor of Dwelling Place Family Church, will begin a new sermon series about prayer in May, beginning May 1 -- National Day of Prayer.
The community is invited to meet at the Gazebo on the Green in downtown Hudson that day at noon where they will pray for the city, its leaders, the schools and the country, as well as for individual concerns.
Dwelling Place Family Church meets at Barlow Community Center, 41 S. Oviatt St., Sundays at 10 a.m. Free child care is available.

Congregational church plans Bible school
First Congregational Church of Hudson will host a Vacation Bible School program June 23 to 27 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
The theme will be "Holy Moses." All children 3-years-old to those in fifth grade are welcome to attend.
The Toddler 3s class will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of the Vacation Bible School week.

at Hope Café
Hope Student Ministries is hosting a film festival at their Hope Café May 2 from 8 to 11 p.m.
There will be homemade movies shown and snacks and refreshments served. This event is open to both middle and high school students.

Boychoir to perform at First Congregational
The Ohio Boychoir, under the musical direction of Dr. David Kienzle, will perform "Sing the Earth Green," an environmentally-themed concert, at First Congregational Church of Hudson, 47 Aurora St., May 4 at 4 p.m.
The program will present both sacred and secular choral music which will explore environmental themes and mankind's stewardship over the Earth.
The concert will include the debut of Cleveland composer Anne C. Wilson's new choral work "We Belong to the Earth," commissioned for the Ohio Boychoir for this concert series.
No admission will be charged.

Church plans groundbreaking
On May 4, Rejoice Lutheran Church will have a groundbreaking ceremony in anticipation of building a new church in Hudson.
The ceremony will take place on church property at 7855 Stow Road, just north of Middleton Road.
It will start at approximately noon.
After the church's 10:30 a.m. worship service, church members will proceed to the site. The church worships at Ellsworth Hill Elementary School at the corner of Stow and Middleton Roads, adjacent to the property.
Places of worship observe Yom HaShoah
Yom HaShoah will be observed May 6 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary Church, 340 N. Main St. in Hudson.
Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) is increasingly observed throughout religious institutions in the United States and Canada.
Temple Beth Shalom, The First Congregational Church of Hudson, Hudson United Methodist Church, the Laurel Lake Community, Christ Episcopal Church and St. Mary Church will participate in a community-wide service of remembrance.
Professor Yoram Eckstein, a survivor of the Holocaust, will be the speaker. In addition to teaching geology at Kent State University, Eckstein is a poet whose latest book is titled "Shards of [personal] history and other poems."
Yellow candles, available at the temple, can be purchased for a suggested $5 donation to aid in home observance.
The candles also will be available at the service May 6.

Children's choir
comes to Hudson
Hudson Presbyterian Church and Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy will host the Children of the World Choir in Hudson for three days.
The choir consists of 12 children, ages 8 to 10 from different countries around the world.
The children use the gift of music to raise awareness about the global population of children afflicted with AIDS.
The concert will be May 7 at 7 p.m. at the Hudson Presbyterian Church, 201 W. Streetsboro St.

Bible school
Friendship Trek Vacation Bible School will be at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church June 16 through 20 from 9 a.m. to noon. VBS includes crafts, games, Bible stories, snacks and music.
Vacation Bible school is for children age 3 who have completed a year of preschool through kids who have graduated fifth grade.
The cost is $10 per child and includes one music CD per family and Bible buddies for each participant.

Organist to appear in free concert May 2
Internationally-known concert organist, master of improvisation, and recording artist Tom Trenney will present a free organ concert May 2 at 8 p.m. at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 476 Mull Ave. in Akron.
There is no charge for admission or parking, and the public is invited to attend this program.
St. Sebastian Church is 1,000 feet east of the South Hawkins-Mull Avenue traffic circle, off the Mull Avenue-White Pond Drive exit of I-77.
Church Women United hosts lunch on May 2
Church Women United of Tallmadge, Stow, Munroe Falls and Cuyahoga Falls will host its Annual May Friendship Day luncheon May 2 at 11:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church, 3493 Darrow Road in Stow.
Tickets are $4 and will be available at the door.
The theme of this year's event is "God's Wisdom Inspires Hospitality" and will feature entertainment by the group Two Irish Harps.
Church will host Relay fundraiser May 6
St. John's Episcopal Church is hosting a Swiss steak dinner to benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life May 6 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Adult tickets are $7, children ages 7 to 13 are $4, and children ages 6 and under are free.
Hot dogs and macaroni and cheese will be available for children.

plan concert
Three Akron-area churches will combine choirs for a special "Celebrate Wesleyan Heritage" concert May 4 at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Master, 800 E. Market Street in Akron.
The Church of the Master choir will be joined by the Chancel Choir of Akron First United Methodist Church and the adult choir of the Stow United Methodist Church.
Ellen Ditrick, music director at the Church of the Master, will direct. Soloists from each of the three choirs will perform.
The concert will feature music by Samuel Sebastian Wesley, a 19th Century composer. Wesley was the grandson of Charles Wesley, a hymn writer who, along with his brother John Wesley, co-founded the Methodist and Wesleyan Churches.
